Nach Abschluss des Integrierten Diplomstudiums der Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Innsbruck (mit Auszeichnung) absolvierte Professor Christandl die Gerichtspraxis im Sprengel des OLG Innsbruck. Ab 2004 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Lehrbeauftragter am Institut für Italienisches Recht der Universität Innsbruck. 2006 promovierte er mit Auszeichnung mit einer Arbeit zum vergleichenden Nichtvermögens-schadensrecht.
Von 2009 bis 2010 absolvierte er ein Masterstudium an der Yale Law School, New Haven (USA). Von 2010 bis 2012 war er wissenschaftlicher Referent und Habilitand bei Reinhard Zimmermann am Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht in Hamburg. 2013 wurde er auf eine Laufbahnstelle am Institut für Italienisches Recht nach Innsbruck zurückberufen, wo er 2015 in den Fächern Bürgerliches Recht, Rechtsvergleichung und Internationales Privatrecht mit einer historisch-vergleichenden Arbeit zum Erbrecht habilitierte. Für seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen wurde er vielfach ausgezeichnet.
Auf die Ernennung zum Assistenzprofessor (2013) folgte im Februar 2017 jene zum Assoziierten Professor. Von März 2017 bis Anfang Dezember 2019 war er Leiter des Instituts für Italienisches Recht an der Universität Innsbruck.
Seit 2019 ist Professor Christandl ständiger Gastprofessor an der Università degli Studi di Padova, seit 2020 Mitglied des Kollegiums der Doktoratsschule an der Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milano sowie Mitglied der Academia Internacional de Derecho de Sucesiones, Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Im Oktober 2021 trat Professor Christandl die Professur für Bürgerliches Recht an der Universität Graz an.
After graduating from the University of Innsbruck with distinction, Professor Christandl completed a legal clerkship at the Innsbruck Higher Regional Court. From 2004, he was a research assistant and lecturer at the Institute for Italian Law at the University of Innsbruck. In 2006, he received his doctorate with distinction for a thesis on comparative non-pecuniary damage law.
From 2009 to 2010, he completed a master's degree at Yale Law School, New Haven (USA). From 2010 to 2012, he was a research assistant and postdoctoral fellow with Reinhard Zimmermann at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, Germany. In 2013, he returned to a tenure track position at the Institute for Italian Law in Innsbruck, where he got his habilitation in 2015 in civil law, comparative law, and private international law with a historical-comparative thesis on the law of succession. He has received numerous awards for his academic achievements.
His appointment as Assistant Professor (2013) was followed by that of Associate Professor in February 2017. From March 2017 until December 2019, he was head of the Institute for Italian Law at the University of Innsbruck.
Since 2019, Professor Christandl has been a permanent Visiting Professor at the Università degli Studi di Padova, since 2020 he has been a member of the College of the Doctoral School at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, and a member of the Academia Internacional de Derecho de Sucesiones, Buenos Aires (Argentina).
In October 2021, Professor Christandl was appointed Professor of Civil Law at the University of Graz.
